Dear All. Many thanks for your messages - it's good to see people
back here again. I am, as Paul so rightly says, now back from the
Philippines - with many strange tales to tell of what goes on there
in certain "English Schools" there.

Meanwhile - back in Hamburg, Germany - I've just put the latest WS
Vocabulary Files and Tests on the site. They are at the top of each
page on pdf files

http://www.wordsurfing.co.uk/4598.html

and any feedback on the updated methods would be most welcome.
Thanks etc & best wishes.

Hi - just to let you know that the Vocabulary File and Tests can
also now be printed directly from the following links

WS Vocabulary File
http://www.nelliemuller.com/WordSurfingVocabularyFile.doc

WS Vocabulary Tests
http://www.nelliemuller.com/WordSurfingVocabularytestFile.doc

The links from the WS site were broken some of the time yesterday
but they're working again now thankfully. Apologies for any
inconvenience.

Anyway, I'm looking forward to getting some reaction about the
updated WS File - and particularly about the WS Tests which have
only just been created.

Best wishes,
Will

Hi Will,
and everyone reading this.

Being a new member I hope I reached the right discussion board.
For a start, I just copy Will's opening idea here.
"The percentage of language students who have a long-term strategy
for vocabulary development seems to be very low. Why?"

Well, my teaching experiences correspond with this. One answer might
be that adults' learning habits are so different from that of a
child. On the other hand language abilities ( and enthusiasm for
languages) differ greatly. I mean when one student has good learning
strategy it may not be obvious to (most)others in that class that by
doing the same could easily jeopardise their progress on the long
run.
My thought is Word Surfing strategy can prove successful only if the
teacher insists on doing this from as early as possible. Learning new
vocabulary purposefully is so much beyond the capacity of most
ordinary students that they must be helped right from the start.
Word Surfing or other methods could well serve this objective.

That's all from me now.
Miklos

I am sure most teachers would agree that students need motivation to
learn. My 30 year experience in teaching ESL/EFL has convinced me

is the best way for students to get involved in real life learning.
Nellie Deutsch has developed WebQuests for students and teachers.

Greetings,

I stopped being burned out as an ESL/EFL teacher the year I decided
to create my own website (2003) and started learning. I have been
having so much fun teaching ever since.

You can be inspired, too. There may have been many ideas you are
reluctant to implement in your classes. Well, it's time to take the
initiative. There are various ways I can help you get back on track
and start enjoying your work once again. I can guide you into the
world of technology and teaching. You can learn how to use Word,

Hello Nellie,

I've been wondering what has happened to wordsurfing group since no one is
corresponding over here for a long time. I know all of us have been very busy
with one thing or the other through out the year. I hope that Will and the other
members are doing fine.

Thanks for the inspiration Nellie.

I just came across an online program that may be an answer to our
weak students.

En101.com was born from an idea to teach "everyday" English to non-
English speakers from around the world who have access to the
Internet.

The goal is to make learning a second language fast, fun and easy.

Thelearning experience is not only enjoyable, but affordable too. It
is translated into 19 languages.

The personalized (one-on-one) teaching method gives each person a
sense of "specialized" learning experience. It is so real that it
seems like our teachers are in the same room with you.

The expert human audio voices pronounce each and every English word
clearly, which is so vital in understanding and speaking the
language correctly.

Studens can learn things they want to learn as they follow a
structured learning system.

Before long they will be able to impress their friends and a
wonderful sense of accomplishment.

Try their free lessons at
http://nels.en101.com/web/Website/homesite01.aspx

Best wishes,
Nellie

I have been asked the following questions and would like some second
opinions.

Vocab: A: a vandal
        B: to stagger
        C: reliable
        D: a guy vs. a man
e: she took it out on the cat

question 1: At which level would you teach it? Give reasons.

question 2: How would you teach the meaning?

question 3: Give concept questions to check the meaning.

I have some ideas which i have passed on but would like a few more.

I hope someone can help.

Hi, my name is James Hall and I am a university EFL instructor in
Japan. Tomorrow, I am going to introduce vocabulary notebooks into a
class I teach for nursing students. One of the main reasons for me
introducing vocabulary notebooks is to encourcage students to develop
word study strategies. I have chosen a vocabulary notebook over word
cards because the latter is easy to lose and it will be easier for me
to track students' work with a notebook. However, the literature seems
to indicate that word cards are more effective than vocabulary lists
because fixed lists encourage learners to remember the order in which
the words appear rather than the actual meanings of the words. I was
wondering what the creators of the word-surfing approach to vocabulary
learning think of this.

The vocabulary notebook I introduce into the class will be a hybrid
between the format recommended in Schmitt, N. & D. Schmitt. (1995).
Vocabulary notebooks: theoretical underpinnings and practical
suggestions. ELT Journal. 49/2 and the wordsurfing technique. This is
my proposed format:

On one side of a page, students will write
1) the meaning of the word they want to know in their L1.
2) a key image or key word to help them recall the word.

On the back of the page, students will write
1)the L2 word
(Under the L2 word, I will also encourage them to write and
derivations of the word, its pronunciation in phonetic symbols if they
struggle with the pronunciation, and the word's part of speech.)
2)connecting words
(I think the expression "connecting words" is easier for my students
to grasp than "collocation". )
3)a sample sentence

Periodically, I plan on reporting on this endeavor in my blog:

Hi James, Thanks for your message - and for introducing WS to your
students.You wrote...

"the literature seems to indicate that word cards are more effective

remember the order in which the words appear rather than the actual
meanings of the words".

well, yes, I'd agree with this when talking about simple lists of
words and translations. The WS notebook addresses this issue in two
main ways....

1. By using "connecting words" rather than translations - to
encourage "real practice" through idea/sentence forming. This
practice discourages rushing from one memory exercise to another -
as is the danger with lists of translations..
2.The WS checking system encourages less practice with "easier"
words - and more repeated practice with more "difficult" words. The
learner will focus on developing new words that are personally more
important. (unlike lists of translations)

Card systems are positive for some people although they are - as you
say - easier to lose ( and harder to manage/with associated
motivational problems). Another big disadvantage of cards, in my
view, is that the repeated physical process of turning over the
cards is likely to distract from the language acquisition/practice
process.....whereas a notebook allows the learner to think/practice
(preferably in L2) in a much more relaxed and concentrated manner.

Ok, all for now - would welcome your feedback/thoughts etc

Best wishes
Will

Greetings Will,

This is James from Japan.

Thank you very much for your response to my e-mail and now I am
sending you a belated reply.

I teach an English class at a nursing school where some of my
students are fairly good English speakers while others cannot read,
write or speak the language. I decided to introduce vocabulary
notebooks to encourage students to develop word learning strategies.
As I wrote in my previous e-mail, the notebooks are a hybrid of your
wordsurfing method and the format sugguested in the Schmitt and
Schmitt 1995 article on vocabulary notebooks in the ELT Journal.

Here are some obstacles I have had with having students keep
vocabulary notebooks:

I have found that it is difficult for students to write a sentence
for each word that they learn. The reasons for this are that
1) They have so many words that they need to learn that the task of
writing a word for each sentence is enormous.
2) Writing sentences and connecting words for target vocabulary can
be redundant. For example, in the class students learn various words
to describe pain such dull, burning, acute, constant, smarting,
sharp, throbbing etc.

In addition to the above, in many higher institutions of learning in
Japan, students take 10 - 15 classes a semester which meet about
once a week. Because students take so many classes, it is difficult
for the teacher to assign the students a lot of work out of class.
It is also difficult for the teacher to take the time to help the
students learn to use their vocabulary notebooks and cover the
material that big brother wants him to.

Enjoy the remainder of your weekend,
James

Dear James:
Since oriental students usually don't use the words in the Notebook very
ofter, and moreover, most of them even don't understand the part of speeches, I
would suggest that you try to introduce that part first by:

1. learn v. We learn English for fun.
2. learning p.p. We are learning English now.
3. learnt p. I learnt ten new words yesterday.
etc.
By demonstrate other familiar words in simpler sentences, until they get used to
the part of speeches, then, let them try other words.
Memorizing Vocabularies from the Notebook is too much. Besides, it's usually
useless for them. They should try to memorize some useful sentences using those
words, then they can retain those words better, and use them in the future when
it is needed.

That's from my experience. I learnt English this way.
