LETTER OF OBJECTION RE:TANGMERE DEVELOPMENT PLANS
I am writing on request from numerous concerned individuals in the
village of Tangmere as to the regard of Historic Battle of Britain
Air station RAF Tangmere.
At the End of its service, RAF Tangmere was entrusted to the city of
Chichester for its safe keeping. It seems today, although with its
international acclaim heralding Britain as a great leader and
protector of the vulnerable, that this dignified, Culturally Iconic
Air station is under threat once more; from its council and
developers!
The history of this station places significance internationally due
to numerous factors. Some I shall enlighten you with now in hope you
may listen and assist in the future safety of this fine emblem of
British dignity and the peaceful continued existence of the
homeowners, the villagers of rural Tangmere. Chichester City council
wish to sell the land to a private developer Namely, SEAWARDS so
they can demolish the airfield and build houses onto it. If you
LOOKED at the area and the history; culturally also, one would see
this is not a positive move for the public interest. Below is some
information you may wish to look over
Development ref: 06/02941, and 06/03377
Listing is currently being proposed for these buildings as they seem
to have slipped through the net on previous occasions. The Fire
department buildings, the barracks, and the Hangers on the airfield
including the airfield curtain and control tower are also very
important to the heritage of Tangmere but mostly to our national
identity. These are unique and very much an endangered building
type. These buildings must be preserved for educational and cultural
value and of course our respect to a memorial! The entire village is
very unhappy with proposed developments as it will reduce quality of
lifestyle to the entire community. Please do not allow this to be
passed it could end up being a national embarrassment if it does. I
speak not only for the UK heritage society but also for the entire
community at Tangmere when I say, "these developments are not
welcome!" As you may know it was home to Douglas Bader and several
other distinguished individuals including Australian Air ace Tony
Gaze, new Zealand ace James Norby King (known as the green kiwi) &
Neville Duke who broke the Air speed record at Tangmere in the
Hawker Hunter And not least, the first woman to receive the George
cross for outstanding service Violet Szabo who like Douglas Bader
(Reach for the sky), had a film made about her outstanding service
the film was called 'Carve her name with pride' and not to forget
the famous narrative involvement with Tangmere in the Film The
Battle of Britain! `The remake is about to be started by Tom Cruise
based around Tangmere's past with Billy Fiske.
This airfield was a benchmark in history as it was the station that
had the First American Loss to the war! And so the United states are
now currently making a new Hollywood film about this very issue!
Produced by Tom cruise, and directed by michael mann it shall show
RAF Tangmere in its prime (re created of course) The film is
named "THE FEW"
There is more info on this at www.spitfireboy.com and also on the
Royal Air Force Historical Association website WWW.RAFHA.CO.UK
Many feel this to be of great disrespect to those who lost their
lives serving our country. We are obliged to preserve such an
important piece of history for the youth of today to remember the
debt of gratitude we owe.
The whole area could be utilised positively by the local council
easily! The Hangers, Airfield Apron, control tower and remaining
buildings could be used for events, possibly even a small airstrip,
local markets, and youth training schemes or even community service
schemes retraining offenders and or the youth in maintenance skills
much needed in today's society!
I trust this information with you, and wait faithfully for your
reply.
Sincerely…
