Hi Merv,

Whippingham Gunsite is completely lost under a housing estate, Think the estate
is calle Whippingham Heights, but is generally known locally as 'Windy Heights'
Don't think there is a single relic of the site left although I have never
personnally searched around there too much; there may be relics of fencing or
the odd piece of concrete path or wall footing somewhere there.

Whippingham's main claim to fame, although hotly contested by Nettlestone site,
was the direct hit at some 20.000 ft on a BF109 recon aircraft during the early
part of the war. The machine broke apart following the hit and most of the
debris came down around the Newchurch area.

Hopefully someone else may have other info or pics, I would certainly be
interested to see or read any further comments on this.

Ive Just asked a local friend on the Isle of whight, and He is familliar with the site..and thinks it possible there may be some relics left.but not mutch....
