Dear ACLU Supporter,

You and the ACLU have to stay on high alert every day until the Senate breaks for its August recess. The Defense Department Authorization bill -- must-pass legislation -- has become an appealing target for advocates of dangerous proposals that undermine civil liberties.

Email your senators and tell them not to let the Defense Department Authorization bill become a vehicle for undermining civil liberties.

The Defense bill already has language that would allow the Guantánamo military commissions to continue to convict people based on coerced confessions.

And more dangerous ideas could be tacked on at a moment's notice.

We could see amendments to stop the closing of Guantánamo Bay and proposals to undercut efforts to hold accountable those responsible for the Bush torture program.

Most dangerous of all, we could see the first legislative attempt to set up a new system of indefinite detention without charge or trial.

Email your senators and tell them not to let the Defense Department Authorization bill become a vehicle for undermining civil liberties.

Please act now. Urge your Senators to watch out for and reject any and all attempts to attach dangerous amendments to the Defense authorization bill.
