All, despite having managed to slip three discs in my back it's looking good for hosting a demo game at Warfare in November.  I've largely finished the terrain having sculpted it from Styrofoam and we gave the board an outing yesterday to make sure the figures would stand up.

We had a cracking game, though my AAR is nowhere near as good and entertaining as many posted on this site, and it ended in a decisive Confederate victory with much acrimony on the Union side as they worked out who was to blame for the misfortune.

If you're at Warfare please come along and throw some dice, our plan is to have a nice relaxing time (especially as I'll probably still be using a wheelchair) showing off the rules and moving figures around.

      Cheers

      Simon

I am planning on doing a painted map for my next trip to HCon next year if I can get my act together. So would be good to see how you have done it.

Thanks. Would be good to chat about the painted map approach as I'm thinking along those lines for the next battle I tackle. Haim in our group has a generic painted sheet which looks good draped across mounded hills, which was how I did Konigkratz using a Cigar Box mat, and I'm starting to ponder this as a more easily storable and portable solution.

Have to admit that I feel somewhat obliged to get accurate terrain to complement a rule set that looks at fighting actual battles rather than generic clashes, so I blame Chris for feeding my compulsion 😀

                    See you at Warfare.

I think that that is the sort of thing that should be in the files section so we can all share how to build terrain base paint etc if links to product suppliers could be provided that may help newcomers like me.  I would like to know how people have painted cloths what paint to use does it crack when folded etc.

A silly example of storage I found a bunch of canvases being sold for £3 each I can store my armies and stack canvas non canvas very cheaply so far my 1866 armies and 1859 figures all sit in an a4 stack

I use canvas "duck" cloth, primed with white gesso and painted with diluted acrylic. No cracking yet though I roll the canvas rather than fold it. Folded canvas requires ironing (on the reverse) to smooth out creases.

I start with white cotton sheets. Usually bought from the local supermarket. A single flat bottom sheet covers a 6' by 4' table comfortably. I dye them in the washing machine, using Dylon dyes. I then use various manufactures spray can paints to break up the base colour. Then using Vallejo paints I airbrush on details; tracks, fields, and the like. If I need more details I use oil-based pastels. Handy for adding extra tracks/roads. I fold them up between uses and I've never seen any paint flake off.

I've realised that they'll look a mess as I'm working on them but once on the table I like the look of them.

Washing them will remove the pastels and some of the paint but I just top it up every few uses. It adds to the patina of the cloths.

I use canvas "duck" cloth, primed with white gesso and painted with diluted acrylic. No cracking yet though I roll the canvas rather than fold it. Folded canvas requires ironing (on the reverse) to smooth out creases.

I can't claim any credit for who I put together my tables. I've just copied ideas and techniques used by Richard Clarke of the Too Fat Lardies.

Re. battlemats, I use a faux mink throw from Amazon in lime green. I put it over the washing line and sprayed it randomly with an acrylic darker green and a sand/buff colour. It has a number of advantages:

                                    1. One side has short tufts - for 15mm and below, whilst the other has longer tufts for 20mm and above.

                                    2. It is very big, roughly  6'x7'6"

                                    3. It is very flexible and drapes very easily over sculpted terrain.

                                    4. Using old styrofoam squares underneath enables sculpted scenery to be pinned in place, tabletop scenery can also be pinned, subtly coloured pinheads can be used to mark out squares.

                                    5. It gives a great look for an investment of less than £30.
