In case it has any relevance (probably not) :-  I know that many RTL dongles also include an infra-red receiver for use with a remote control, and such devices present themselves as having two separate USB functions, the radio receiver and the IR receiver.  You must ensure that you choose the radio device rather than the IR device when installing the Zadig driver.  The name "RTL2838UHIDIR" would imply the IR portion of the dongle.

Interesting idea Alan, after following the other's advice I got down to copying the 'Advanced Mode' Log file and pasting it here in the forum.  You can see my USB keyboard and such along with the dongle, however it appears that there is another program interfering with things.  Unfortunately I cannot tell WHAT process is effecting Zadig.

Thanks again to everyone for their thoughts, if I haven't replied to everyone, trust that I've taken your advice into account... unfortunately with no success.

BTW, I caught my misspelling of the installer....  ;)
