Group Description

Stanhopes Collectors International is an electronic forum established for collectors of Stanhope microphotographic novelties. Since Stanhopes are significant cross-collectables, they can also be found in collections of many other categories of small antiques, such as writing equipment, sewing accessories, jewellery, royal or religious souvenir items, smoking accesories, etc.

Stanhopes, or 'peeps', are the miniature cylindrical microphotographic lenses incorporated in many novelty collectables produced from the mid-19th century onwards. The lenses have now given their name to the complete novelty. The microphotographic images can include pictures of historic personalities (royalty or national heroes), newsworthy events, architecture, methods of transport, works of art, saints and many more. The most common views are of various locations: tourist areas, world fairs and religious shrines. Images of semi-clothed theatrical ladies from the Edwardian era and complete nudes dating from the early 20th C. are very popular and often achieve some of the highest prices. To view the hidden image in a Stanhope novelty, look for a small glass "bead" in a knob or the handle of the object. Hold this close to the eye, focus on a light source and a fascinating black and white picture from the past will be revealed.

Stanhopes are often found in small items made of bone, such as needle cases, dip pens and rosaries. Many other novelties were made in dark-coloured materials, which can make it difficult to distinguish the tiny glass lens. These include items made of carved wood, bog oak, minerals (serpentine granite or jet), and coquilla nut. Some of the earliest Stanhope collectables were made of gold decorated with semi-precious stones, such as watch fobs, watch keys and jewellery, and these will be the most expensive and treasured pieces in a collection.

The photograph shows an assortment of fairly easily found collectables containing Stanhope lenses.
