Well Rick , I've gone thru this exercise I suggest you take the engine and gearbox out
together. There is more to dismantle with the gear lever and clutch slave cylinder etc,but
when it comes to removing and replacing the bolts from the bell houseing and starter it can
becomes a pain. I have a 528i with a (5 speed manual gearbox and it is rather a stubby unit) which makes it easy to remove complete. Good luck John from Oz.

Question for the guru's out there. Is it easier (or even possible) to
remove the engine and trans (manual) as one unit or is it easier to
unbolt the engine and gearbox and just remove the engine?
The book I have only says the latter.

      Many thanks in advance,
