So I guess if you had to pay $9 a gallon for petrol you'd not
want to run a 528i Auto then?

Best of luck sorting the diesel.

        Hello all.

I have recently acquired a 1986 535i, which is currently wearing its
original wheels with some rather old Avon metric tyres. The tyres still have
some tread left, but I am pretty sure that their age means that they are
well past their best. There is some tramlining and squirming under heavy
braking (subtle rather than severe) which I suspect may be down to the
        tyres.

So I need to decide whether to find a set of the original metric TRX tyres
or to change the wheels and leave the metric tyre problem behind.

Does anybody have recent experience of finding TRX tyres? Are they available
anywhere (in the UK) at a reasonable price? Any views about how the Avons
        compare with the Michelins?

Of the non-metric options, which wheel size and tyre combination is best for
535i handling. I would only want to use wheels that look right for the
period of the car presumably some version of BMW cross-spoke.

        Thanks for any ideas.

        Simon.

That's the way to go. I've put a set of 8x16" wheels on my 528i
they came off a '95 7 series wear 225/50/16s and fit without any
          problems.
On my wife's 520i I've just put a set of 7.5x17" that had
255/40s on, again they fit without problems, however the wheels
are a deep dish (2.5" rim) I've had 215/45s fitted on them and
they are superb albeit they make the car look a bit like a
          pimpmobile.

If you're working to a budget check out eBay for alloys
(remember postage about £40 a set), or local breakers (up here a
set of alloys starts at £100) generally E34 alloys will fit
straight on, 7 series alloys probably will as well.
If you have a big budget you might want to consider looking at
some of the eBay specialists a brand new set of alloys with tyre
packages aren't as expensive as you might think.

I might be able to get some pictures of my BM's complete with
wheels if you want a butcher's?

My local quickfit quotes £140 + VAT per tyre for a 220/50/390 so
          not
