  • Doesn't take long to fit a fan clutch. Did mine last year - about15 mins - 32mm spanner round an opposite thread - dead simple. Good idea to replace it because I believe they were a little unreliable. My fan clutch (made by Sachs) cost £40 so I would question him. • Hi everyone - sorry about the last blank message - pressed return by accident. Does anyone out there have any experience with the various stop leak products on the market? My 82 528i developed an engine oil leak which appears to be coming from the rear - possible rear crankshaft oil seal? Regards John (in the UK) [Non-text portions of this message have been removed]

  • Hello all - Got a problem sourcing some new tyres for my '82 528i. The ones on the car are 200/60r390 and a firm up north (UK) has informed me that they can supply me with 230/55r390 tyres. I'm slightly concerned about the 3cm extra width fouling on the wheel arch over big bumps. M5s have 225/60r390's on them so I figure, maybe foolishly, the extra width shouldn't make a difference...

  • Jim - I was told once that synthetic oils are not compatible with old tech oil seals therefore tend to leak through these. I'm no mechanic so I just took this advice. Is it true? Cheers John [Non-text portions of this message have been removed]

  • Hi Lee - I own a '82 528i and I change the oil and filter every 3000-4000 miles (although the manual says 6000 I think). Thing is I do a lot of short journeys. I use ordinary Castrol GTX. The oil remains pretty golden brown throughout this period. My other car ('72 Reliant Scimitar GTE) turns oil black after about 200 miles and it's not running rich. Change the coolant every 2...

  • Does anyone know why some oil filters have a perforated paper wrap around the element (i.e. Knecht) and some, in particular Fram, do not? Cheers John 528i

  • Hi everyone - anyone got any ideas on how I can remove the rotor arm out of my distributor ('82 528i). Can't just pull it off 'cos it's too stubborn and there's no grub screw securing it on as far as I can see! Always the same - simple job turns into complete nightmare! Cheers John

  • Hi all - I'm sending this again because I don't think it got through first time. This is my first posting into this group. I've owned an '82 528i for almost a year now without any problems but recently it's been very reluctant to start when cold but when it does its very lumpy and down on power. When it warms up everything's 100%. I have almost no experience with fuel injection but...
