  • I am looking for a replacement camshaft for the 528e, but I have found no affordable aftermarket products. What are the differences between the camshafts below? Part# 11-31-1-276-441 (1986 BMW 528e E28 & E30 325e) Part# 11-31-1-716-138 (1986 BMW 325i, is E30 325iC, iX E30) The -441 OEM camshaft is at least 500 US dollars. The -138 from aftermarket suppliers is about half that.

  • Doug, The BMW subframe can hit the underside of the car under certain conditions. You must think German when working on these cars. The subframe was NOT designed to place a floor jack under the car in the middle (under the rear differential). The other thing that can cause the subframe to strike the car body is if the subframe mount bushings are worn out. I have seen some e28's...

  • On the e28 6 cylinder 2.7L BMW's... The crank bolt is not a standard item. It is BMW-designed and employs the bolt and washer as a complete unit. In other words, you can't buy one at any Nut-&-Bolt supplier. The hex on the bolt is 22mm. You have two "reasonable" options for removing it (the 3rd option is plastic explosives or HCl acid, I suppose). Option 1. Use/make a tool that...

  • Hello, Brian. You can try this place. I have rebuilt two e28 speedo's using their gears. http://www.odometergears.com/subpages/bmw.html --- In bmwe28@^$1, "Brian M. • There are two AA rechargeable batteries. You need the type with solder lugs on the ends. Several possibilities are: What I used: Panasonic # P-80AAS (Ni-Cd 800mAh/1.2v KR-15/51) Another possibility: Radio Shack # 23-191 1.25V/600mAH Ni-Cd Battery w/Tabs The batteries control the service interval lights (green/yellow/red) that tell you when to change the oil, etc. If you want to...

  • I have a 1986 528e. What would cause the air conditioning to work fine for about 15 minutes or so, then start heating up slowly? This occurs under the following conditions: * Air vents closed (no outside air leaking in). * Temp switch set to coldest (rotated CCW). * A/C fan speed set to medium or high (2 or 3). * Outside temp above 90 deg F. (It doesn't seem to act up until the...

  • I have a 1986 528e with a manual transmission. Recently, the following things have started to malfunction: * Speedometer doesn't work. * White-needle vacuum gage (located just below tach) doesn't work. * On Board Computer OBC works except for the fuel consumption & driving speed (MPG & MPH buttons). After driving the car for 20 minutes or so, the vacuum gage starts cycling on/off...
