      Hi guys,

its great to know the group is expanding and should go some way in helping
us up overcome the problems associated with being hard of hearing or hearing
      impaired.

I'd like to be included in any information regarding the formation of any
groups in London. As I live in the South East of London, it would be more
convenient for us to have a central location to meet, initially, then we can
all then decide whether to meet in any other parts of London.

      Hi All,

I'm interested in organizing a HoH group too, but I have no
idea if any of you lives in the
Richmond/Kew/Putney/Chiswick area or SW of greater London
area. I wouldn't mind meeting anywhere in London, though.
As Shaffron said, pubs are not the best places sometimes,
but since we all agree on this one, I don't really worry.
We could organize meetings for captioned movies, for
      instance.
Anything real life, so everyone will feel less isolated.
Let me know what you think.

      thanks,
      eleni

for several suitable venues in the centre for our future social
meetings. Any ideas very welcome! I assume that week days are best
for the majority of people, in the evening (around 6-7pm)?

will go to London very soon to look for a suitable venue and I shall
ask what it's like on a Friday evening. I know that pubs tend to be
much busier and hence much noisier on Friday evenings, but it would
be a pity for you to miss out, particularly since you are so keen. So
if others agree, we will try and hold our first meeting on a Friday.
I will try to find either a pub where we can have a room upstairs, or
a venue other than a pub.

              How about Friday 3rd October?

Unfortunately, I'm not free on the Fridays before that, but at least
              it gives members enough notice.

To all members interested: Please let us know if the suggested date
is OK? and if you already know of a good quiet venue in London that
you think would be suitable, please let us know too.

              Thanks,

              Saffron

                Hi Saffron,

the 3rd Oct is ok with me.

Incidentally, when I first came to London in 1992, there used to be a very
good HOH group that met once a month upstairs in the Globe, Convent Garden
(I can't remember the name of the street but it is the same one on which the
Royal Opera House is situated) on a Wednesday evening. Unfortunately, it has
now been disbanded but this could be a good venue for you to try.

                Peter

                  Hi Saff

Was good to meet you yesterday and Mazz too - my first real life
                  meeting of another hohuk member!

The venue I was telling you about is in Covent Garden, the pub was
called The Globe and they were very friendly towards us deaffies when
we first met there, but management may have changed hands now?

There is a room upstairs that they used to let us use for free and
they would put up a private function board to stop other people using
the area. It's not very big but very quite and a comfortable place.

Like other groups it seemed to get going, then peak then people got
fed up, no one was willing to join in the organisation and so thus
                  died.

It's a lot of work to get people interested and keep everything
going, but there was soemthing good about meeting so many other
younger people with a hearing loss.

In a way it was a victim of it's own success... people felt much
better after meeting and talking to other people, they got back
into 'mainstream' socialising and the numbers dropped off...

Looking back it was a little bit like going to a support group, you
kind of 'got cured' of feeling isolated and you didn't need the group
anymore, which was great for hoh people but sad for the organisers!

You really do need a lot of back-up to keep it going. I hoe I don't
                  sound pessimistic, just realistic...

Has anyone else had any similar experiences?

                    Hi Maria,

are you the same Maria I used to know from Dagenham, who attended the
meetings in the Globe in Convent Garden between 1992 and 1993?

Do you remember me and Daniel Twite?

                      Hi Peter

Your name rings a bell but I can't put a face to it. Obviously you
was at the Globe too. I can't believe we posted a message about that
                      1 minute apart!

1992! Was it really that long ago!

It was a very memorable time for me as I had not long faced up to the
fact that I did have a hearing loss....

Would be good to meet up again so perhaps we can persuade Saffron to
                      have the first meeting there?

                      Regards,

                      Maria

                          Hi...

The 3rd October is good for me. I will be in Italy from 9-25th October.
Quiet venues in Central London not always possible and I don¹t know the
city that well. The suburbs tend to be quieter i.e. Richmond. Even a
Saturday lunch would be good idea. I am quite flexible and will follow most
                          if I am available.

                          Best wishes

                          Jonathan
                          jonathan@...

Hi Peter and Maria, what a coincidence indeed, about your posts
regarding the Globe and you having actually met before!

I shall certainly be checking up the Globe. I hope it's not changed
much and it's still the same management.

I agree that it can be hard to get this sort of social groups going,
but hopefully, now we have the internet, it will be easier. I also
think that it's important to have more than one venue and have
variety (not just pubs). Personally, even though I feel much less
isolated than I used to, I think I will always find the need to meet
up with other HOH people, because the hearing loss is always going to
be there and noisy places are always going to be difficult
socialising places, but I can see what you mean about some people
losing interest once they started feeling better, Maria.

Yes, it was really great meeting up yesterday! At last! The 3 "Essex
girl moderators of HoHUK!" LOL ... now we need to meet up with HoHUK
Northen moderator, Elaine! lol! (for those of you who wonder, it was
just an informal short meeting, as I was near Maria's area yesterday
and Mazza also leaves East of London... we had been planning to meet
up for well over a year now and it never seemed to happen).

that bad like Eastenders lmao. I live about 20 miles from East
London more near Kent. Actually come to think of it most of the
Eastenders lot live near me so the accent would be the same :/
Maria lives nearer to East London than I am.

                                    Hi Mazz,

I know you don't live in East London, lol... that's why I said: "East
of London"... I just didn't want to be too specific, as this is the
big world wide web. (Germany is East of London too, lol... I just
happened to see a sign to a German town in Barking the other day and
it also said how many kilometres away it was, or was it miles?).

About the accent, my hearing isn't good enough to distinguish any
accent when you speak. For me to notice, it would have to be really,
really, really strong, like little Mo's nan in Eastender (the oldest
Slater, can't remember her name now), lol. I'm terrible at accents
anyway. The only accent I can impersonate in English, is French
accent (yes, I know, my accent is sort of French anyway, but I can
exaggerate it, like in "Allo Allo")... and the only accent I can
impersonate in French is English accent (and yes, I do have a natural
subtle English accent when I speak my native French, so again, I just
                                    have to exaggerate it), lol.

All this talk makes me want to go to South OF London (no, no, not
South London, I mean France!)... now I'm being really silly!

That's great Sarah, looks like there are already 8 of us, which is
really good. Anyone else interested? Venue should be announced next
                                        week.

Apologies to our members who are outside London... this is the first
HoHUK meeting and it's taking a bit more organising, but once we get
things going, it shouldn't take the noticeboard (or HoHUK emails)
                                        over.

Members who live outside London and would like to organise a social
meeting with other HOH people are very welcome to advertise it here
                                        too.
