Updated league table, after Perikles played 20 Jan 08.

I have listened to comments, and changed the formula for rating and therefore league-position accordingly  - despite the fact that the new formula accidentally and temporarily puts me on top again - temporarily.

      POINTS:
      4 players: 1st gets 5 points, then 3,2,1 points.
      5 players: 1st gets 6 points, then 4,3,2,1 points.
[I know I'm rewarding a total defeat with 1 pt rather than zero, but
it's nicer that way; I hate to see people on zero.  And I know it kinda under-rewards a win versus coming 2nd, 3rd etc., but that helps motivate players to care whether they come second, third etc. rather than win or bust]

      FORMULA for Rating and Position:

NOW: Cumulated points earned, divided by number of games played + 1.
No longer as it was: Cumulated points earned, divided by [2X the number of games played, +1], with a one-off free extra point for a first-timer if he didn't win (scrapped).

      Games so far:

      2 Dec 07, result:  (all as first-timers)
      BobR........5 pts
      FelixK......3 pts
      AndrewM.....2 pts
      NeilP.......1 pt

9 Dec 07, result: (DaveB, MichaelY as first-timers)
      BobR.........5 pts
      NeilP........3 pts
      DaveB........2 pts
      MichaelY.....1 pt

13 Jan 08, result: (BrianO, JosepA, MartialC as first-timers)
      BrianO.......5 pts
      JosepA.......3 pts
      MartialC.....2 pts
      BobR.........1 pt

20 Jan 08, result: (AttilaW, MikaelS, AllanM, RichardB as first-timers)

      NeilP.........6 pts

      AttilaW.......4 pts

      MichaelS......3 pts

      AllanM........2 pts

      RichardB......1 pt

SO: the updated "fun league" looks like this:

      Player.........Points.....Played......Rating

      1. BobR.........11.........3...........2.750

      2. NeilP........10.........3...........2.500

      3. BrianO........5.........1...........2.500

      4. AttilaW.......4.........1...........2.000

      5. MikaelS.......3.........1...........1.500

      6. JosepA........3.........1...........1.500

      7. FelixK........3..........1..........1.500

      8. AllanM........2..........1..........1.000

      9. MartialC......2..........1..........1.000

      10.DaveB.........2..........1...........1.000

      11.AndrewM.......2..........1...........1.000

      12.RichardB......1..........1...........0.500

      13.MichaelY.......1..........1..........0.500

In case you are interested, when it's a tie on rating, most recent result ranks higher, otherwise alphabetical.

And in case you are interested on the volatility and ease-of-overtaking:

If NeilP were to win the next 4-player game of Perikles, and BobR didn't play, then NeilP would reach 3.000 and take over top-spot.

If NeilP were to win the next 4-player game of Perikles, and BobR come 3rd out of 4, then NeilP would increase to 3.000, and BobR would reduce to 2.600, so NeilP tops the table.

If neither BobR nor NeilP plays in the next game, but BrianO does and wins (4-player), then BrianO would move to 3.333, topping the table ahead of BobR still on 2.750 and NeilP still on 2.500.  If BrianO only came second, he would reach 2.666, ie coming in the league between BobR and NeilP.

And if AttilaW won the next game, (5-players), and NeilP came 4th and BobR fifth/last, and BrianO didn't play, then AttilaW would reach the top of the table with 3.333, ahead of both BobR and NeilP, both reduced to 2.400.

So it IS nicely volatile, especially in the early stages, where anyone can go and head the table if they win the next game!

Enjoy each game.  The league-table is only for added interest, not to be the main reason for playing.  We will still mostly play OTHER games, un-leagued.

        Oh and also:

If MichaelY or RichardB won the next game, say it is a 5-player-game,
then they would jump their rating to 2.333, and thus jump to 4th in
the league, or else 3rd or 2nd if they also beat one of the first 3
into a low-result, which also brought THEIR score down!. It's all to
        play for, as they say.

Good work Bob, i like the fact that players can can move up or down depending on results - encourages players to eek out the best result per game. Strategy.

Good work Bob, i like the fact that players can can move up or down depending on results - encourages players to eek out the best result per game.

Strategy. The five player game was very interesting - says the only player so far to play both 4 and 5 player games. I suspect 4 player would be my preferred choice, but i would recommend 5 player.

          Lets look at the differences:

Influence tiles. You will pick 4 not 5 and (as per usual) they must be different colours. Less influence in cities so there should be no 'huge' build up unless you save influence over rounds.

Elections. These are tighter affairs, with less chance of getting even 2 cities let alone 3, Influence lost from winning can really hurt as you cannot accumulate a huge amount in a single round. Statue points are valuable.

Deploying troops. You now have only 4 turns to deploy troops. This can prove harsh if you have a few cities to defend. Players may be more likely to select the one shard influence tiles (especially when likely to be defending) to enable them to delay deployment.

Battles. We saw less VPs being awarded due to some locations deliberately not being attacked. The defender gets 2 extra influence, but not the Battle VPs. Less troops deployed means players less likely to spread troopos over multiple battles and virtually no 'deliberately' token gestures of opposition.

It would be interesting to get other player's views on this.

Awards vote.  Who has voted so far: Neil, Dave, Allan, Bob, Brian.
