Group Description

18th Century Beginners Baroque Dancing Classes.

Come and learn how to dance beautiful and elegant 18C dances such as the minuet, bourée,gavotte and sarabande,as well as other dances of the baroque period. The group is taught by one of the UK's top baroque dance teachers, the inspirational and fascinating,Barbara Segal.

For anyone not too familiar with Baroque Dance, it was the precursor to ballet and is associated in particular with the Court of Louis XIV where it was danced at grand balls and social events. In France it was called 'La Belle Danse' and was performed mostly, although not exclusively, between 1600 – 1750.

This is a new dance group based in Winchester which meets twice monthly on various Saturdays and Monday evenings. It is suitable for beginners or for those with some experience of dance. We dance to some lovely classical music ( such as Purcell's Theatre Music) and hope to have our own musicians group before long.

Whilst some of the participants simply like coming along because they enjoy the dancing, others hope to form a display team in the near future ( which will eventually be formed of those who wish, and are up to a standard, to perform)

As well as learning these wonderful dances, some of us are busy planning on making some stunning 18C costumes and we hope to encourage some members of the class to come to some of the wonderful balls and other 18C events in this country and abroad.
